In some places, the Larches are already starting to turn, which means that September is right around the corner. September brings many things: cooler temperatures, changing leaves, and soon enough, winter. But for now let’s focus on the task at hand: getting the kiddos ready for back to school.
Now, there are many places around town where you can get shiny new items to bribe your kids into excitement for returning back to prison– we mean school — but there are also places you can go to be frugal. Right smack in the middle of downtown is the Great Canadian Dollar Store, and we know that your kids are probably going to roll their eyes when you tell them you got their back to school items at the dollar store. But not as hard as they would if you told them that they have to go back through their entire workbook from last year and erase all the pencil so that they can re-use said workbook (don’t do this). Never fear, your savior is here, because we have some tips and tricks to make those bland notebooks into works of art they are proud to have on their first day back to school.
You can find many things at the Great Canadian Dollar store, and that includes craft items. Silence your kids moans and groans when you turn up with bags full of dollar store steals, when you pull out the glitter sticks, craft paper, and anything else that might turn those frowns upside down. Crafting new covers for your kids notebooks will not only make them super excited to start school on September 4th, but it also gives all of you something to do with the current weather (smoke) advisory.
If you want to continue on this frugal streak, head downtown with your (older) children to Trend Fashions. Sally will not only be super stoked to go back to school shopping, but she will be elated when she finds out that they carry amazing brands like Wilfred, Calvin Klein, and Steve Madden. The cool thing about Trend Fashions is that clothing must be name brand, in pristine condition, and washed in order to be put up for consignment. The even better thing? All these name brand items are a score at up to 80% less than their original price. Last but not least, you can likely find some key items for his or her wardrobe at Hello Vintage. You’ll need to set aside a good chunk of time for this one, as their store is currently BOOMING with stock.
If you can’t score anything at these locations, head back to the strip and hit up stores like Glaciers Edge, UNLTD, or Indigo Bay. A little outside of downtown but not to be forgotten: Bow Valley Basics has all of your back to school stationery needs covered, and Crossway Thrift is bound to have an item or two.
