A Jacket
We are sure that you’ll be happy you listened to us when you reach your first summit and the clouds roll in. On average, mountain tops tend to be about 6 degrees colder than in town and there is almost ALWAYS a breeze coming from the North. Additionally, weather has a way of rolling in without any notice in the Rockies. One minute you could be basking in the heat of the summer and then suddenly it is a torrential downpour with the temperature at a measly 8 degrees. You’ll be all set for your Canmore adventures if you pack a jacket that is both windproof and waterproof!
Waterproof Pouch
When visiting Canmore odds are you’ll end up in the water, especially if you connect with Bow Valley SUP or if you go River Rafting. Like we said before, the weather also has a way of blowing in unexpectedly and if your valuables are already in a waterproof pouch then you are more than ready for the next water-logged activity or momentary rain storm.
Your Hiking Boots
This seems to be one a lot of Canmore visitors forget. The good news is that Valhalla Pure has almost every type of hiking shoe that one could need. Also, new-age hiking shoes are comfy and practical for walking around town to find the perfect apres-hike spot in the summertime. They are most often lightweight and cushy while also looking cute, so they can match your outfit for the day.
A Hat
In the summertime, it gets HOT here. Seeing as we are at an elevation of 4296 metres above sea level, Canmore is closer to the sun than you might think. Bringing a hat with you is a good idea for more than just one reason: cover your bedhead when you stroll downtown at 6am to get a cup of java before hitting the trails, cover your lid while hiking, and to keep your sweaty mane shielded from the public eye when you head out for a beer and burger post-hike.
Your Face Mask
As of August 7th, 2020 face masks are now mandatory in Canmore when entering and browsing local businesses. The Mandatory Mask bylaw (2020-20) compels residents, visitors, and businesses to wear a mask or face covering in all public indoor settings (some exceptions apply). Bylaw will only enforce the bylaw with a fine if there is no compliance. Fines are $100.
Hydration Pouch or Water Bottle
Odds are, you’ll be doing lots of hiking and exploring during your time here and that means you’ll have little opportunity to get yourself water. Be sure to pack a hydration pack or reusable water bottle, to accompany you on your adventures, because dehydration is more probable at high-elevation. If you forget, don’t fret! There are lots of places downtown to buy yourself a hydration vessel such as Alberta’s Own or the TinBox.
There are obviously plenty of items we could rattle off on this list of things to remember when packing for your vacation in Canmore, but it is also good to note you can generally acquire many of the items you need here in town at the downtown Canmore businesses!
