School’s out and Spring is in the air with reaching sun rays and soft chinook winds creating warmth in the Bow Valley. You’ve packed up your bags and are enroute to Canmore and seeking family-friendly Spring Break activities that will fill your time with smiles, laughter, and a bit of sunshine.
Spring Break can’t be all go, go go; if you’re seeking a good mix of go time and down time, Downtown Canmore is the place to be! You’ll be able to spend plenty of time with your family out in the fresh mountain air, keeping you connected through shared adventures in the great outdoors.
If you’re ready to plan your trip from day one to seven, here are some great family-friendly Spring Break activity ideas that are great for all ages to make this a trip you’ll all remember:
Shopping Spree!
Your family vacation wouldn’t be complete without some indulgences and souvenirs commemorating your trip to Canmore and it’s surrounding Rocky Mountains. Stroll the downtown streets, enjoy Canmore’s vibrant shopping scene; follow your grumbling tummy and nose to a tasty treat at the Old Tyme Candy Shoppe, or pick up a new board game from Armadillo Games to enjoy a night in.
Indoor Activities
If it’s a bit more on the chilly side during spring break, a great way to enjoy Canmore as a family is to duck into one of our museums or historic sites to learn more about our history here. You can check out the Canmore Museum and Geoscience Centre or head over to Canmore Cave Tours to crawl through the underground cave network known as the Rat’s Nest! Both are super cool and unique experiences, and both will keep you sheltered from the cold temperatures outside.
Sips and Nibbles
Whether you’ve got a handful of ravenous teenagers with hollow legs or young, picky eaters, there are plenty of dining options in Canmore to suit any taste bud. Tuck into some delicious après-ski flatbreads at Rocky Mountain Flatbread and treat the whole family to a round of Beavertails for the ultimate comfort food experience.
Experience Rocky Mountain Tubing
Of course, on spring break everyone wants to go skiing in the Canadian Rockies – especially because there are so many amazing ski resorts nearby. When your family’s ski legs have turned to jello and you’re looking for a different way to enjoy the steep mountain slopes, it’s time to try tubing at Nakiska Ski Resort in Kananaskis. After an epic afternoon of tubing, you can head back to Canmore to enjoy our worldly dining scene – the perfect way to tire out the little ones early and fill their bellies before bedtime!
Indoor Climbing
Canmore is lucky to have two great climbing gyms, within walking distance to downtown. Elevation Place features routes of varying difficulty, as well as courses and on-site gear rentals. If you’re keen on climbing but would prefer to get yourself some new gear, swing by Valhalla Pure before hitting the gym! The team at Valhalla will get you into some well-fitting and flashy new gear so you can show off your moves in style at Elevation Place, or the Canmore Climbing Gym. If you’ve chosen to climb at Elevation Place, don’t forget your bather for a cool dip or hot tub soak post-climb!
Dog Sledding the Canadian Rockies
Snowy Owl Dog Sled Adventures is perhaps the best way to have some outdoor fun that is both educational and interactive! You can enjoy a range of tours from shorter two hour treks to overnight excursions, with the amazing opportunity to drive your very own team of husky heroes. During your time with Snowy Owl you’ll enjoy plenty of interaction time with their happy and excitable husky pups, cozy camp fires, hot beverages and sweets, with a Native Canadian lunch cooked fireside on longer excursions! This is one memorable excursion you and your family won’t soon forget, and is the best way to enjoy a trek through the Rocky Mountains.
