Canmore’s cool glacier winds can make for a chilly walk in the spring and fall, but come summer time the afternoon sun downtown can be sweltering. Luckily Canmore has plenty of options for beating the heat with icy sweet treats. We’ve compiled a list of all the places where you can find something cool and refreshing while you explore Canmore’s downtown shopping and trail network.
Scoopin’ Moose
The Scoopin’ Moose has been serving up delicious ice cream cones, milkshakes and soft serve to the Canmore community for years. They have a variety of different flavours and options to trick out your selection like waffle cones made in house. They also mix up house made vanilla and chocolate soft serve ice cream for those who like a smoother creamier cone. Their convenient brick and mortar location right on Main St. makes them a great choice for popping in between your gallery and clothes shopping!
Old School Bus Ice Cream
The wheels on this bus do not go round and round but they do serve amazing ice cream all summer long! A unique take on the traditional ice cream truck, this seasonal shop operates out of a big yellow decommissioned school bus! They offer big scoops of classic ice cream flavours with a side of whimsy. You can find this bright yellow attraction on 10th street, in a lot right beside Hello Vintage clothing!
Canary Coffee Ltd.
Hot drinks and cold desserts all in one convenient cafe! Look for the little yellow bird hanging on Main Street signalling where to stop when you’re craving some frozen yogurt. Complete with eclectic bird cage decor, this lovely cafe serves espresso beverages, iced coffees and along the back wall are multiple soft serve dispensers. Our recommendation? An ice coffee float! Combining childhood nostalgia with your favourite daily drink they put soft serve inside your coffee cup for an incredibly creamy caffeinated drink! Try one next time you hit a mid day slump while shopping downtown.
Beaver Tails
Most well known for their delicious deep fried pastries, Beaver Tails located inside Rusticana Grocery on the corner of Main and Seventh also offers a variety of amazing gelato! Ice cream’s Italian cousin, gelato, is known for being richer and creamier than traditional scoops. With fun and unique flavour combinations like the Reese’s Pieces filled “Triple Trip” or the sweet and salty “Skor Cheesecake” you might want to leave the warm Beaver Tails for winter adventures and try a cup of gelato on your next trip to Canmore!
Sweet Revenge
Say hello to the new kid on the block! This tiny ice cream parlour packs big and bold flavours into its unique creations. Located just off Main street, tucked between Liberty Clothing and it’s sister restaurant 4296, Sweet Revenge offers soft serve sundaes with wonderfully wild toppings. Elevating ice cream to new heights, you’ll find flavours usually reserved for fine dining establishments, like honey oil, truffle salt, and gold flakes! If you want a departure from the traditional two scoop cone be sure to give Sweet Revenge a try on your next visit!
Mountain Juice Cafe
For a chilly treat that’s a little healthier but just as tasty as a regular ice cream crone try one of Mountain Juice Cafe’s smoothies! Filled to the brim with fruit and frozen yogurt or sweet sorbet these smoothies satiate ice cream cravings while still being packed with vitamins and natural flavours. With a plethora of berry, tropical fruit and even dairy free menu options this cafe located on the corner of 8th Ave and Main Street is a must try for summer sipping.
For a small mountain town, Canmore has a frozen dessert for every age and palate. From family friendly scoop shops to sophisticated sundaes, you’re sure to find something for everyone this summer. Whether you’re looking to cool off after a long walk or coming downtown specifically for ice cream you won’t be disappointed by the offerings on and around Main Street.
